Life of Medgar Evers CommemoratedIn observance of the fiftieth anniversary of his death, MDAH will commemorate the life of civil rights leader Medgar Evers with exhibits and programs. Evers was the Mississippi field secretary for the NAACP from 1954 until his assassination in the driveway of his family's home in Jackson on June 12, 1963.

Old Time Music Gathering at Historic Jefferson College

Living History Troops Capture the Old CapitolThe sixth annual Great Big Yam Potatoes Old-Time Music Gathering and Fiddle Contest kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 at Historic Jefferson College. Enjoy performances by some of Mississippi's best old-time musicians on the outdoor stage, watch talented fiddlers young and old vying for the prize in the fiddle contest, or join a jam session in the shade of the majestic live oaks.

MDAH Awards Preservation Grants at Quarterly Meeting

At its regular quarterly meeting on April 19, the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History awarded grants totaling more than $80,000 to seventeen preservation projects in Certified Local Government communities across the state, designated a new Mississippi Landmark, and approved three new State Historical Markers.

"Shipyard of the Future" Subject of Next Brown Bag

At noon on Tuesday, May 21st, as part of the History Is Lunch series at the William F. Winter Archives and History Building, retired Ingalls Shipbuilding vice president and general counsel George W. Howell will discuss how Mississippi won out over Florida and landed the "Shipyard of the Future" in 1967. Howell will also present items related to this historic event, including photographs, color slides, audio tapes, files, and other items, to the state archives for preservation.
