Research at the Archives
The library is divided into three areas. The public reading room contains nearly 20,000 published works on Mississippi genealogy and related fields. The archival reading room is where patrons use original government records, rare or fragile published works, and unique primary sources such as diaries, personal correspondence, maps, and photographs. The media reading room offers microfilm readers, audiovisual equipment, and computer terminals for accessing census records, newspapers, and other microfilmed materials, as well as video and audio recordings and electronic collections.
Pencils, notecards, paper, spiral notebooks, and portable computers may be brought into the library. Lockers are available free of charge in the lobby for items such as briefcases and purses. Work tables in the reading rooms have power outlets for laptops. Scanners and cameras are not allowed in the library. Reading Room Hours In Jackson, take Interstate 55 to the High Street exit. Take High Street west and turn left onto North Street. Free parking is on the left, just before the Winter Building.
William F. Winter Archives and History Building |
In 2003 the Mississippi Department of Archives and History moved into the state-of-the-art William F. Winter Archives and History Building. The 140,000-square-foot Winter Building has working space for 160 researchers at a time.
Patrons must have a researcher card to use the library. There is no charge to obtain a card, but a photo ID is required. The researcher card serves as a debit card for use with printers and photocopy machines in the reading rooms. Credit can be added on site with $1, $5, $10, or $20 bills. Patrons may make photocopies of most materials for $0.20 each; photocopies made in the archival reading room are $0.25.
